‘Affectus’ is a project that hybridizes the aesthetic and conceptual universes inherent in reconstructive medical sciences, biological sciences, ancestral artifacts, and animal domestication instruments; distilling these categories into sculptural pieces that allude to the reconstructive prosthesis of Grecia (the toucan), the first bird to have received a beak prosthesis.
Through the hybridization of a beak, symbol of bird nutrition and consequently a fundamental element enabling life, with biomedical industrial tools for the reconstruction of the human hand, the project aims at the hand-beak relationship. Analyzing the social-historical baggage of the human hand as an authoritative figure of power over an “other” is the premise of this project, which presents a work that encompasses the complexities that make up the practice of care.
